The Journey – Mile-by-Mile Breakdown

Mile 0-7.5: Ease Into It

Your ride kicks off on pavement before transitioning into loose gravel—this is the most traveled section of the route.

Mile 7.5-12: The First Climb

As you climb into the Horseshoe Hills, the Bridger Range spreads out behind you, offering killer views. Settle in and enjoy the grind. It’s a steady climb, but nothing too punishing just yet.

Mile 12-16: Dirt Road Dreams

Here, the gravel transitions into dirt roads, and this is where things get tricky. If it’s rained recently, this section turns into a sticky, impassable mess—do not attempt it!

Mile 16-18: The First Push

Time to earn your downhill. A short but tough climb gets you to the high point of the route, followed by a niceee long descent that makes all that work worth it.

Mile 18-28: Rip It & Grip It

Mostly downhill with a few punchy rollers—watch for cows on the road and stay aware of your surroundings. This section is pure fun with great flow.

Mile 28-33: Paved Reset & Optional Pit Stop

This is a great section to spin out the legs. If you need supplies, you can make a quick pit stop in Manhattan or take the frontage road back to your car if you want to cut the ride short.

Mile 33-45: Time to Grind

If you’re in for the full ride, this section is a grinder. You’ll be in for a long climb back to the top, so pace yourself and find a rhythm.

Mile 45-53: Cruise Back to the Car

Once you hit the top, it’s all downhill back to the pavement where you started. Enjoy the descent as you spin your legs out all the way back to the car.

Route Highlights

This route is perfect for intermediate to advanced gravel riders who are comfortable with long climbs and varying terrain. Our team loves this gravel ride because it’s remote, scenic, has a great mix of terrain, and THAT DESCENT THOUGH. The 10-mile downhill section is pure Montana gravel magic!

North West Gravel 50 Ride Practical Tips

Equipment:

Gravel-specific tires are a must for handling the mixed terrain. We have plenty of options to suit your bike and riding style!

While this one is pretty straightforward, it’s always a good idea to bring a navigation tool like a Wahoo GPS. Don’t have one? Swing by our shop to pick one up before your ride!

Bring water and snacks—there are no refuel points between Bozeman and Manhattan.

Weather:

Always check the forecast! Montana weather changes fast, and the dirt section is unrideable when wet. Carry a light rain shell—especially if you’re riding in the afternoon.

Post-Ride Fuel:

Here are some great post-ride stops back in Bozeman:

  • Shine Beer Sanctuary – Killer craft beer selection and good vibes.
  • Bridger Brewing – Solid pizza and house-brewed beer.
  • Jam! – If you’re finishing in the morning, this is one of the best breakfast spots in town.
